New city traffic ordinance to protect Waco cyclists
By J.B. SMITH www.wacotrib.com
The Waco City Council on Tuesday green-lighted an ordinance requiring motorists to give cyclists wide berth.
The council voted 6-0 on the first of two required readings to support the ordinance to protect “vulnerable road users,†including those on bicycles, mopeds, scooters — even unicycles. Motorists would be required to change lanes to pass such a vehicle if there …
Day 33: Richards (Mexican Hill Ranch) to Shepherd, Texas – 62 miles
by Tres Smith tressmith.com
A bittersweet roll out of the rest day at Mexican Hill Ranch and the great hosts, Erny and Doris. They could not have been sweeter or more hospitable. Imagine letting me milk and associate with their livestock. It was a life event. I am a better person for meeting them. We rolled out under cloudy skies, with our rider that had been ill and …
Day 31: La Grange to Richards, Texas – 89 miles
A good sleep and away I went with the fellow I have been riding with the last week or so, Rich Niewald and his wife Chrysa. They are RAGBRAI veterans from outside of St. Louis. Rich is a great rider and has a big motor. His wife had gotten food poisoning and was not riding today. We seemed to ride possessed today with a fairly reliable tailwind for our 89 miler. We flew to the first …

As with any family, there can be relationship issues that need to be addressed. One of our leaders, Kent, the favorite of most, is leaving the tour. He and Sandra, the other leader, have had issues since the beginning and could not get them resolved. Kent decided to leave. There were tears shed this morning as …

Day 38: Caballo Lake State Park to San Lorenzo
Sunday March 27, 2016, 57 miles (92 km) – Total so far: 2,391 miles (3,848 km)
After about 4000 feet of climbing, we reached the highest point of our trip today! It took almost 6 hours to make it up to Emory Pass, which is about 8200 feet above sea level. The view from on top was amazing. After a little break on top, we then begun our descent, eventually making it to a little town called San Lorenzo, where we found a nice little …

Luba: up and down, repeat
Wednesday April 6, 2016, 47 miles (76 km) – Total so far: 1,492 miles (2,401 km)
Had our meager breakfast in our dark log cabin and left early to tackle a tough hill before it got too hot. The ascent started very soon. The sky above the mountain we were climbing was dark and gloomy. Heavy clouds looked threatening. Still, I took off my windbreaker in preparation for the hard work of riding up the steep hill. I did get up, but it was purely on the willpower I newly discovered. My whole body was very reluctant and my legs were trying to refuse to pedal, but I willed them to. Once I got to the crest I felt great and prepared to fly down. Well, this anticipation was …

Apr 6: Rest Day Fort Davis
Wednesday April 6, 2016
A pleasant day off here in what is apparently the highest town in Texas. I seem to have a bit of a day off routine now; lie in – relaxed breakfast – laundry – clean Rory – planning and admin.
Oddly the eating establishments here seem to go for quality over quantity. So the Mexican meal last night was tasty but could have been a little bigger. This morning’s breakfast was very good but again a bit on the small side. Then for lunch I got a take-away sandwich from a make-to-order place which was rather dwarfed by the paper bag it came in! So I decided to cook for dinner to make sure my legs aren’t too hollow tomorrow.
Fort Davis is a small town but has everything you need. Grocery …

Day 38 – Brackettville to Comstock, TX: 3 miles from Mexico
Wednesday April 6, 2016, 63 miles (101 km) – Total so far: 1,728 miles (2,781 km)
After a breakfast burrito I headed west on US 90. We will be travelling on US 90 for several days now. My analogy to grandfather roads doesn’t work out west as they usually just rebuild the roadbed. This part of US 90 was once the first road connecting San Antonio to El Paso. The shoulder I rode for 30 miles to Del Rio was mostly chip and seal, uggh. I did though enjoy watching planes circle at Laughlin Air Force base which the road passed.
In Del Rio I asked someone for a lunch recommedation and we had a …
MS-150 Packet Picked Up & Ready To Roll April 16 & 17Packet
Cycling Space City cyclingspacecity.blogspot.com
Went to Memorial Park and got my rider packet for next weekends MS-150 ride. This year with Houston’s petroeconomy in the tank raising the required $400 minimum was much harder. I also heard ridership will be down to about 11,000 riders. I”m looking forward to seeing if I notice a difference on the roads with less riders. Also with the Waller County Sheriff announcing his …
