Woman dead, man wounded in Third Ward shootings
Drew Karedes www.khou.com
… In one case, police say a man walking a dog was shot multiple times. He is said to be in stable condition at an area hospital, but his dog was shot as well and was found dead at the scene.
In the other incident, a woman who was riding a bike was shot at least once and was pronounced dead shortly after.
Officers are speaking with area residents trying to find a motive for the shootings or determine if they are connected.
Investigators say there is a good possibility that both of these shootings may have …

Day 34: Van Horn to Sierra Blanca
Wednesday March 23, 2016, 34 miles (55 km) – Total so far: 2,126 miles (3,421 km)
The wind was brutal today. After breakfast this morning we set out to try to make it to the next town, knowing the forecast called for up to 60 mph wind gusts coming from the west. Unfortunately, we’re heading straight west today. So as you can imagine, we weren’t able to move very fast with a constant headwind of at least 40 mph all day. We did end up making it, however, to the next town over (about 34 miles away) after a grueling 6-7 hour battle to keep our bikes moving forward and not backward. After arriving here in Sierra Blanca the wind picked up even more, and …

How Much Is Enough When It Comes To Spending On Border Security In Texas?
Andrew Schneider www.houstonpublicmedia.org
A Border Patrol bicycle unit in McAllen TX.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement just completed a five-week operation against transnational criminal gangs. The operation netted 1,133 arrests around the country, including 112 across Greater Houston. The question of how to keep such gangs from operating in the U.S. is at the heart of the debate over security along the U.S.-Mexico border.
The latest congressional hearing on border security took place just one day after …

Mar 29: To Marathon
Tuesday March 29, 2016, 56 miles (90 km) – Total so far: 2,471 miles (3,977 km)
I forgot to mention yesterday about where I was camping. There’s an RV park on the edge of Sanderson. Sandwiched between US 90 and the railway line. Cheap but I didn’t get the best sleep ever.
I was on my way at 9 AM today. Despite my Wal-Mart shopping spree the other day I was getting low on snacks so stopped at the gas station on the way out of Sanderson to pick some up. After that it’s nothing for the 60-ish miles to Marathon.
A few miles in, a camper van was stopped by the side of the road and a chap was sitting outside. He flagged me down. Last night he’d had a tire blowout and needed a mechanic’s help to sort it. He’d called the AAA but no-one turned up so ended up camping out by the road last night! Unfortunately I couldn’t get any signal on …

March 29: Big Bend National Park TX
Tuesday March 29, 2016
No riding today. Stayed in the Chisos Mountain basin in the heart of the Big Bend park. Chisos is the name of the mountain range that was formed by the volcanic activities about 20 million years ago. Just being there filled my heart with joy from all this beauty. Leonid and I hiked up the Lost Mine Trail today. Richard decided to stay in. Many handsome vistas made this trail quite dramatic, although significantly populated due to its popularity and proximity to the lodge. The 5 miles did not satisfy me, so I decided to do the Window Trail as well. Leonid had …
