Bicyclist dies in hit-and-run collision in NE Harris County
By Dale Lezon www.chron.com
A bicyclist died Tuesday night when a hit-and-run driver in a sports utility vehicle slammed into him on a roadway in northeast Harris County.
The incident happened about 9:15 p.m. in the 17000 block of Beaumont Highway, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said Clepatrick Palmer was riding his bicycle eastbound in a lane of traffic when the driver of an older-model …
I traded in SXSW ‘networking’ for a 60 km cycling adventure through a Texas state park
By Selena Larson www.dailydot.com
The muddy red roads and rolling hills smattered with budding flowers in Bastrop State Park, 45 minutes outside of Austin, Texas, stood in stark contrast to the debauchery and startups on display during the South by Southwest Interactive (SXSW) festival last weekend.
Each year during spring break, thousands congregate in downtown Austin to network with peers in the tech industry, trying to give away free swag and convince attendees to download new apps. Dogs roam the streets as cute live advertisements for …

Mar 16: To Round Top (Photos)
Wednesday March 16, 2016, 59 miles (95 km) – Total so far: 1,810 miles (2,913 km)
I managed to be efficient in the morning, for once, and was rolling away from Navasota around 8.30 AM. First thing was cooler than usual but the sun soon came out.
After a couple of miles the route went onto a pleasant backroad for while. …

Day 22: Bastrop to Pedernales Falls State Park (Photos)
Friday March 11, 2016, 84 miles (135 km) – Total so far: 1,489 miles (2,396 km)
Days like today make the rest of the trip feel easy. The morning went well, and we made it about 30 miles into the city of Austin around noon. The ride into the city was nice, and with the rolling hills we got glimpses of the tall buildings long before we reached the downtown area. …

Day 25 – Kerrville to Leakey
Saturday March 12, 2016, 68 miles (110 km) – Total so far: 1,476 miles (2,375 km)
Well, the rain definitely came! It didn’t come too strong on Monday, but Tue-Fri was pretty much non-stop! My sister came in Thursday night, so we got up on Friday and planned to drive until the rain stopped, so I could bike. Needless to say….I didn’t bike yesterday! Drove to Kerrville and it was still raining, so just got a hotel for the night, as it was pointless to try and do anything after 2pm.
Saturday was clear, although quite cold after the week of rain! Took off and the climbing started! It was basically non-stop climbing for the first 40 miles, although it was moderate climbing, so it was very manageable. The fact that my gear was in the car with my sister was also a huge help to making that manageability.
Was about 10 miles outside of Kerrville when I saw this sign – a bad sign of things to come! Certainly pretty scenery I’m sure, but hills aren’t …
Day 26 – Leakey to Highway 334 Turnoff
Sunday March 13, 2016, 33 miles (54 km) – Total so far: 1,509 miles (2,429 km)
Not much to report for today. My parents flew in around 1pm today, so I knew I could bike until 12pm or thereabouts, so I could get back to Uvalde to shower before heading to San Antonio with my sister. Loaded up the bike in Uvalde around 8:30am, so I could get up to Leakey at a reasonable hour, since I only have a few hours to bike. Decided to skip a bit of riding close to town, as it was narrow, windy roads, so went a few miles out of town and started to ride.
Was basically downhill all day long (pay back for the climbing yesterday I suppose). Was able to get in …
Day 27 – Highway 334 Turnoff to Del Rio
Monday March 14, 2016, 62 miles (100 km) – Total so far: 1,571 miles (2,529 km)
Got back to the turnoff for Highway 334, so that I could get out riding around 9am. It was quite hilly to start off the day for the first 20 miles, but then I had 40 miles of mostly gradual downhill, which made for an enjoyable day. The only downside it was hot today. Got up to 100 degrees around 3pm, which is a bit warm to be riding in…
Day 28 – Del Rio to Langtry
Tuesday March 15, 2016, 63 miles (102 km) – Total so far: 1,634 miles (2,630 km)
Woke up ready to head on to Langtry before 9am. Walked out to take off and noticed the new Trek had a flat! So off the wheel comes and time to swap out the tube. Glad I got a spare tube yesterday, or I would have had to wait for the bike shop in Del Rio to open! Hope we don’t need another one! Kept the flat in case we need to patch it up…
Got started out of Del Rio and crossed the Amistad Reservoir, which is the dammed up Rio Grande. Runs across the U.S.-Mexican border.
The 30 miles of the morning went quite well. Was a good climb of about 700′, but it was very gradual and it wasn’t too warm yet.
Started to have some nice scenery through West Texas. Quite a few canyons as I followed the Rio Grande along the …
