Why am I doing this?
Sunday December 20, 2015
Since I read my first journal on Crazyguy, I knew that bike touring was something in my future. Unfortunately, I did not have a bike that was capable of touring. My Fuji Team road bike was not a bike I could tour with. So first, I had to get a bike. Being me, buying a off the shelf bike was not something I could do. The local bike shops didn’t have anything that I wanted, so I had to build my own. After a ton of research, a Surly Ogre frameset was on the way, and all the parts on order. I wanted a Rohloff internal gear hub, but thought my wife would divorce me over that purchase, so that was put off for another time. I wanted a front generator hub, to charge my phone and run my lights, so I figured, I would have to build my own wheels. Having no experience doing this, I did what I always do, I bought books, read, watched utube videos, and built my own wheels. My surly Ogre 29’er was built and I began to ride again. Corpus Christi, where …

Lost Maples State Natural Area to Leakey, TX.: Or how we found our match.
Tuesday December 22, 2015, 20 miles (32 km) – Total so far: 20 miles (32 km)
Leaving Lost Maples State Natural Area where Luke and I spent a great night camping across from a family with 4 small girls who talked well into the night. Winds of 35 mph created a interesting backdrop. During the night the winds died down, and the moon and stars shown bright. Morning came to early, cold and damp. After a great breakfast of Eggs, sausage and potatoes in a cream gravy (yummy) we headed out finally at 1000. My front tire and been giving me issues with slow leaks, so instead of changing out the tube, I figured lets see how long it lasts, then switch tubes. It didn’t last too long before I had to change it out. But the road was sweet, little traffic, a great shoulder in case of need, and beautiful scenery. However a great idea can become difficult quickly, and this happened when we hit the first hill (ah mountain?). I first thought it was a powerline or something going up the side of the hill, but when we …
Day 3: Where no cycling happened.
Wednesday December 23, 2015, 14 miles (23 km) – Total so far: 34 miles (55 km)
The plan was to go to Enchanted Rock State Park. But it was a 2 hour drive there by car. The plan was to cycle to Fredricksberg that day, have lunch, visit the Pacific war museum. But sadly it was not to be. By the time we got there there, we had to make other plans. The road was not a good road for biking, with no shoulder, and the time was short. So we visited the …
Day 4
Wednesday December 23, 2015, 14 miles (23 km) – Total so far: 34 miles (55 km)
Our ride today took us through Inks Lake State park and on the road to a town called Kingsland. Made the mistake of not wearing my bike shorts with insert and after 6 miles my butt was numb. We stopped at the Hoover valley general store for some ice cream bars and chocolate sodas. The hills were more manageable and the ride great. With the pain and …

12/26 & 12/27 rides: Long Ride to Liberty Hill! Red Horn!
by Thomas      steinerranchcycling.com
Merry Christmas, SRC!
Many people are out of town or otherwise being forced to spend time with our demanding families. A few people, at least, have indicated that they can get away for our regular Saturday ride. If you can make it, a nice long ride up Parmer and over to the Liberty Hill store would be a great way to burn off some of that eggnog. If that doesn’t appeal to those that …
