Day 18: Ft. Davis Layover: A lovely little town
By Judy Gamble      www.crazyguyonabike.com
No Tears on the Southern Tier
Sunday September 27, 2015
Today is a layover day to rest our weary muscles.
It was our intention to get out on foot to have a look at town. We did that early in the AM and stopped for a AYCE Buffet for $9.95 at the Bistro. It was good and filling.
It wasn’t long before we were back on our bikes (oh, weary legs!) to travel the 1.5 miles to the Ft. Davis Historic site and a bit of grocery shopping for tonights meal.
Ft. Davis was built in the 1854 to protect to travelers on the main road linking El Paso and …
No medals, but plenty of mettle, for Team USA
By Andrew Hood      velonews.competitor.com
RICHMOND, Virginia (VN) — The six-man American squad lined up on home roads Sunday as outsiders and underdogs, but they put on a show for the hometown crowd worthy of a medal.
Much to the delight of U.S. fans watching the first UCI Road World Championship in the United States in nearly 30 years, three Americans went on the attack, first with Virginian Ben King, followed by late-race moves by Taylor Phinney and Tyler Farrar. Alex Howes (12th) and Brent Bookwalter (19th) punched into the top-20 to finish off an animated day in the saddle. …
… “We’re very excited to race here in front of the home fans,†said Texan Lawson Craddock. “We know we are not starting as favorites, but we want to make a good race for the fans.†…

By John MacCormack      www.mysanantonio.com
Amos Lozano works on his balancing skills along Broadway Street during the YMCA of Greater San Antonio Siclovia, Sunday, Sept. 27, 2015. The event is free to the public and a 3.25 miles stretch of Broadway from downtown to Lion’s Park is closed to traffics so that the people can walk, run, bike and enjoy the area. Also included in the event Dignowity Park on the near eastside.
A celebration of fitness, play and community, SÃclovÃa kicked off its ninth edition Sunday morning at Alamo Plaza with rock music, cameo appearances by politicians and several hundred people on bikes, all anxious to get rolling.

Cycling and Driving Survey
Harold Stanislaw, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology, California State University
Welcome to the California State University, Stanislaus Cycling and Driving Survey!
This survey is part of a scientific study being conducted by Dr. Harold Stanislaw and the students in his PSYC 3800 course at CSU Stanislaus. The survey asks about you and your attitudes and habits when you ride a bicycle or drive a car. You will also be asked about your accident history. You must be at least 18 years old to complete the survey.
Most people finish the survey in 15 minutes or less. Completing the survey does not guarantee you any benefits, but you may learn how research in psychology is conducted and how bicyclists and motorists act on the road. More information about the study will be provided at the end of the survey. …
New Mexico to the Gulf of Mexico!
By Steven Neish      www.crazyguyonabike.com
First Day: New Mexico to Pecos-Through the Oil Field
Saturday September 26, 2015, 56 miles (90 km) – Total so far: 56 miles (90 km)
My son flew down from Minneapolis to San Antonio on Thursday night. He was responsible for delivering me to West Texas. Last night, we drove from San Antonio to Pecos, TX after dinner. This morning, we woke up, had breakfast, and loaded the bike into the back of the car and drove for the New Mexico border.
He dropped me off on Highway 285 at the New Mexico border. Originally, when I was planning this ride, i thought that I would leave from Carlsbad, NM. There is a feature at Google Maps, where you actually can look at the road. Google has driven almost everywhere in America and mapped a ridiculous number of roads. Anyway, a few months ago, when I was planning, I used the Google Maps streetview feature and “rode” the route I was planning to ride. I wanted to make sure that there were shoulders along most of the route. Even if there isn’t much traffic, its not as much fun to ride in car lane. On my virtual ride, I realized that the shoulders in …
