Day 20. Erick (OK) to Lake McClellan (TX): U-Drop Inn
Monday August 31, 2015, 65 miles (105 km) – Total so far: 1,186 miles (1,908 km)
Ah, what a night’s sleep! The Days Inn gave me a pillow-top king-size mattress only a month old.
I only saw one car on Route 66 for my first 90 minutes today, and it continued that way the rest of the day. Not more than one car an hour all day long. But it was a slow day, more headwinds and all uphill. I started the day at 2100 feet and ended it at 3200 feet, with lots of rollers in between.
Erick is famous for three things: Roger Miller (“King of the Road”), Sheb Wooley (“Purple People Eater”), and a Route 66 fanatic named …

Day 21. Lake McClellan to Amarillo: Voluntarily?
Tuesday September 1, 2015, 63 miles (102 km) – Total so far: 1,249 miles (2,010 km)
The Lake McClellan Campground last night was full of goatheads. Extra vigilance was required. It turns out that my Crocs are excellent goadhead collectors. Bicycle tires are pretty good collectors too. And goatheads are hard (and painful) to pull out, kind of like a fishhook. But luckily I got all of them out before they could cause a flat. Yeah! …

New Mexico to the Gulf of Mexico!

Why Am I Doing This?
Saturday August 1, 2015
Over the past year, I got back on my bike. A lot of things pushed me back, or pulled me back.
Probably, the biggest pull was that I realized that I am happier when I am riding. Not just while I am riding, but throughout my whole life if I am riding. Somehow, I forgot about that over the past too many years in a row.
So, a year ago, at the beginning of July, I decided that I weighed too much, that my blood pressure was too high, and that I wasn’t doing anything special for myself. I pulled out my Trek 5020, which is a wonderful carbon fiber road bike from the late nineties. I had ignored it for a couple of years, so I had to get it tuned, replace the tires, etc. And then it was great again!
A few years ago, I moved from Houston, which was not a great place for bikes, to San Antonio, which is a wonderful place for bikes. Without realizing it, when we bought our house, on the north side of San Antonio, we ended up a block away from a road with bike lanes that connects to other roads with bike lanes, which leads to the Hill Country, and connects to parks with bike trails.
The more I rode, the deeper I was pulled, and the longer my rides became.
Somewhere, along the way, over the past few months, I decided that I wanted to …
… Almost ready to go
Sunday September 20, 2015
In five days I leave for New Mexico. My son, Marcus is going to drive me to the New Mexico-Texas Border, where the Pecos River comes across the state line. He will drop me off and that is where I will begin my ride.
I will be dropped off on US Highway 285, just inside New Mexico.
My planned route takes me along the following path:
-Starting point where the Pecos River enters Texas …

OPINION — Miller: Lubbock needs better, safer biking routes
By Jarrod Miller, Opinions editor      www.dailytoreador.com
Riding Lubbock’s streets on a bike should be a hobby reserved for adrenaline junkies. The last time I tried to ride a bike through Lubbock I was almost clipped by an oversized truck speeding along Quaker Ave. The driver had swerved just enough to pass me, and my bike and I were almost blown off the road. As the truck passed, I almost swear I could see the driver, with a cigarette in one hand, Bud Light in the other, laughing at me with his beady little eyes.
Bicycling on Lubbock roads may be fun for adrenaline junkies and masochists, but I am neither. The trucks aren’t the only hazards on the road — there are plenty of Lincoln Town Cars with elderly, dazed …
