San Antonio-bound. I’ve lived in Texas roughly half my life, but this is the first time I’ve ever been on a train here. I’ve ridden and driven past a lot of freight movers, and I made a regular habit out of rail travel when I lived in DC, but I never have here in Texas. There’s something fantastically consistent and smooth about trains. These big machines lurch out of the station and meander like a Hank Williams song for an hour or three until they reach their destination. At its best, cycling shares a similar rhythmic sense of …
Let’s Ride! Fall Calendar of Cycling Events
by Joan Vinson      therivardreport.com
As summer give way to fall and, maybe, just maybe, the first cool front sweeps into South Texas, cyclists who have been training in 100-degree heat can look forward to a calendar of organized rides in and around San Antonio and the Texas Hill Country. If we are missing any rides, please send an email to joan@rivardreport.com and we will update the list.
Roosevelt Park to Mission Espada: Saturday, Sept. 5, 8 a.m.
Looking for a nicely paced urban ride where you won’t be dropped? No registration is required for this informal 18-mile ride that will start at Roosevelt Park and turn around at Mission Espada. Austin PD Tracking Bike-Related Crashes to Boost Safety
By Chris Cybulski      www.twcnews.com
Video
The Austin Police Department is trying to better understand bike use.
Earlier this year they began tracking bike-related crashes.
Before this, the city didn’t have a way to track where and when bike-related wrecks were occurring.
Officers said they hope this new effort will clue them in to where more enforcement is needed.
They’ll also give the data to the city so they can see where new bike lanes are needed.
“It is really everyone’s job to …

Polio pedal pusher recalls WTX
By Jeremy Gonzalez      www.fortstocktonpioneer.com
West Texas made an impression on Nick Hall, age 67, on his recent solo biking expedition from San Diego to St Augustine. Across the United States, including in Fort Stockton, Hall sported his Rotary Club t-shirt to raise awareness for a club project called End Polio Now.
“The bike ride was the entertainment; to end polio was the serious message,” said Hall.
Hall faced the challenges of strong wind, blowing sand, uphill slopes, thunderstorms and …

Violet Crown Trail, Phase Two progress
by The Tip      www.bikemojo.com
I ran across a city survey crew out flagging portions of Phase Two of the VCT. Stopped to chat to see what they knew.
They were along the east side of Mopac right where the natural trail comes out of The Indian Grass Prairie Preserve (just past Dolly Llamas favorite spot). He said that the trail they are flagging is going to follow the existing single track BOTH ways at that little Y. There will be trail running south along the northbound frontage road to tie into the sidewalk in front of the bank and Whataburger.
There will also be trail that will turn north, like the single track does now, then turn west under Mopac, on the south bank. There is a fun, challenging, bit of single track there now. When the new spur of the VCT comes out on the west side of Mopac, it will turn south and …
