What Happened to My Garmin 510?
Rolling out the driveway around a very big pile of mulch I stopped for traffic and to start my Garmin 510. When I glanced at the 510 I didn’t notice that the profiles had changed. I turned left and rode about 100 feet and stopped because the sensors were not registering on the 510. That was when I noticed my profiles were gone and the display screens were back to the default views. This was not a good start for the ride. I punched on some settings and made some changes trying to get the speed/cadence sensor to connect with the 510. I thought it was working and resumed the ride. I didn’t get too far (about .3 of mile) and again noticed the 510 was not working properly. Another session of screen flipping and punching settings trying to get it setup the way I like.
I use two profiles, one for road biking and one for mountain biking (really trails, we don’t have anything even approaching a mountain in Houston). I thought I had recovered the settings after the .3 mile stop and started riding again. When I got to 5 miles I saw the lap notice did not come up so I tried searching for that setting but couldn’t find it. I did set an alert for every 5 miles in the meantime. Next I stopped where I exit Kingwood Greens onto W. Lake Houston Parkway and tried looking again for the lap setting. I finally found it and set it. I think I have the settings I needed for today’s ride. Then I noticed the auto pause was not working which affected my average speed because it was counting during the stops to fix the 510. I found that setting and was now ready to continue.
The plan was to ride the “FM1960 to FM686 – Back” route for a little longer distance than usual and with the threat of rain tomorrow I wanted to get some extra miles. I rode that route and logged 38.93 miles (not counting what I lost setting up the 510). Leaving home at 12:17 and with the 510 setup delays I hoped I wouldn’t be caught in some late afternoon rain. I wasn’t though the gray sky was not encouraging. It was 83 degrees and the SSE 10 mph wind was not that helpful riding to FM686. Returning from FM686 was a little easier with the coming from my left side slightly to the rear. The 510 average speed was 14.0 mph while the Golden Cheetah program credited me with 15.3 mph. I like the GC one and think it is closer than the 510 average.
When I got home I found out all of the activities that were on the 510 were gone except for the last 3 rides. Fortunately I copy the files from the 510 to my computer after each ride.
Riding about half the miles on FM1960 is different from my usual activity. The road is generally smooth shoulders except for the first mile or so after crossing into Liberty county. I didn’t feel the chip’n seal as much because I was concentrating on keeping a good pace into the wind but I did notice when I got onto the smooth pavement before going up the railroad overpass hill (our mountain). The return leg was quick after the short turnaround stop at the Dayton Food & Fuel store at FM686. I wore a new Sweatvac cap today and at the stop I took time to wipe the sweat from behind my sunglasses. Overall I like the Sweatvac cap. This was the third ride wearing my new Catlike helmet too. I like the larger vents on the Catlike versus the ones on my old Bell helmet. A nice feature of the Catlike is mess in the 2 front facing vents to keep bugs out. Also the vents are large enough to get a finger in to scratch my head when I need to.
I got back home at 3:43 making this a 2:47:21 ride. I stopped at the Huffman Chevron to rest and refuel. The wind felt good as I sat eating and drinking. I stayed a little longer than usual allowing my legs to recover a little before tackling the last 11+ miles to home.
Activity standings after today’s ride: 144.78 miles this week, Riding time this week 9:43:39. 508.62 miles this month in 33:33:58 riding time. 1519 miles for the year biking 46 times so far.
