Recovery Day With 23 mph Gusts
The dog sprints yesterday took a toll on my legs for today’s ride and if that wasn’t enough the wind was tough. From the south at 14 mph with 23 mph gusts it slowed me down every time I rode into it. The worst section was riding west over Lake Houston on FM1960. I called for the legs to put out more power and they ignored me. I slowed to 10 mph a couple of times but generally stayed at 12 mph. Overall I averaged 14.4 mph.
I rode a slightly shorter route that I label “Atascocita – Huffman” leaving out the short excursion into Walden (this ride was 29.66 miles). I don’t know if I could have pedaled the extra 3 miles. I saw 5 other bikers as I pulled onto FM1960 from south Atascocita Shores Drive. I could tell they were fighting the wind as well. Earlier on Farmingham Road two other bikers were ahead of me for a mile before our routes separated. Near the end of the ride as I turned onto Sandy Forks two other bikers pulled up behind me. I thought our ways would separate but we stayed together most of the way home. One of them lives two streets west of my street. I had never met them before.
Even though the temperature was in the mid 70’s when I left home at 11:49 I wore a long sleeve jersey atop my shorts. I wasn’t sure that strong wind was all that warm. It was a good choice plus I didn’t need sunscreen.
This is the first week riding over 200 miles this year coming in at 204.39 miles. March moved up to 504.64 miles and year to date I am getting closer to 1000 at 939 miles.
Maybe the wind will let up some tomorrow and my legs will recover some. Tomorrow’s weather forecast: high of 80 with a mostly cloudy sky. No rain.
