Longview firefighters reduce fire hazards, create new bike trail
By Alex Byrd      www.news-journal.com
Ten Longview firefighters broke 250 yards of new ground recently as they extended the first public, off-road biking trail while simultaneously creating a fire break path.
The city’s Parks and Recreation Department, Longview Bicycling Club and the Longview Fire Department are working to elongate Grace Creek Mountain Bike Trail from Maude Cobb Convention and Activity Center to behind an auto dealership and former movie theater on Texas 31 in Longview.
A fire break path is a trail that keeps a fire from…
Shavano Park hike-and-bike trail plan ready for review
By William Pack      www.mysanantonio.com
Shavano Park is a city where joggers and biking enthusiasts looking for a little early-morning exercise have to share the roadways with businessmen and women getting an early start for work, and officials would like that to change.
“There are no hike and bike trails in the city now,†said Mike Janssen, a member of the city’s Planning & Zoning Commission who chairs a working group charged with developing a proposal that would correct that problem. “We don’t even have a lot of sidewalks.â€
His working group, which has been examining solutions since the beginning of the year, has…

Mass. man stops in Carthage on bicycle tour
By John Hacker       www.carthagepress.com
When he left Carthage on Monday, Steve Laskey was 139 days into an epic bicycle tour that he hopes will see him touch all 48 contiguous states in the U.S. before Thanksgiving.
The numbers are intimidating — he had ridden 5,400 miles as of Monday and he expects he’ll have ridden between 7,500 and 8,000 miles when he’s done.
Laskey, 52, is on his third major bike tour in 18 years and he’s dedicating this tour to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which provides dream-come-true trips or gifts or other assistance to desperately sick children.
Monday was day 139 of this tour and he anticipates he’ll be on the road another 53 or so days before…
