Author: Nakia Cooper, Sr. Web Editor      www.click2houston.com
HOUSTON – Harris County Sheriff’s deputies have confirmed that a second grader riding a bike to school was injured in an accident with a vehicle in northwest Harris County Wednesday morning.
Deputies said the bike rider crashed into the vehicle near Lowery Elementary in the 15900 block of Ridge Park.
The child was transported to the hospital for treatment.
The condition of the victim is not known.
The Wife and the Mountain Bike
Bike Noob
I came home from work today to find my mountain bike standing on the garage floor. This is unusual, because it normally hangs from hooks in the garage ceiling.
“Did you go for a mountain bike ride today?†I asked my wife.
“I did!†she replied.
Her own bike was over at our local bike mechanic, getting an overhaul.
“And did you take it down by yourself?†I asked. “That isn’t easy.â€
“No,†she said, “it’s not.â€
“How was your ride?†I asked. “Say, compared to last week, when you took it out.â€
“You know, it was a lot tougher,†she said. “Those gears just didn’t want…
Dallas to boost safety at 70 spots where hike-and-bike trails intersect with streets
By Tom Benning      cityhallblog.dallasnews.com
Safety upgrades are coming to 70 potentially hazardous spots in Dallas where hike-and-bike trails cross streets.
The City Council on Wednesday approved a $664,000 contract to install better signage, directions and other warnings at at-grade trail-road intersections on Katy Trail, Cottonwood Trail, Preston Ridge Trail, Santa Fe Trail and White Rock Lake Loop Trail.
The enhancements – funded mostly by the Texas Department of Transportation, with some support from the city and Dallas County – are modeled after upgrades added a few years ago at the busy intersection of Katy Trail and Knox Street.
Aside from the obvious safety benefits, the broader citywide effort aims to clear up confusion for both trail users and drivers on how to handle the crossings, officials said.
“Cyclists and pedestrians have had to come to different intersections and do different things,†said Michael Hellmann, an assistant director in the city’s park and recreation department. “So there’s a real…
Industry legend, Bill Quinn, dies at age 102
by Marc Sani      www.bicycleretailer.com
FORT WORTH, Texas (BRAIN) — Bill Quinn, the longtime publisher of Bicycle Business Journal, has died. He was 102. Quinn’s career spanned more than 80 years of publishing. He was still writing and taped an audio interview of his early years in newspapering just two months ago.
Steve Matill, director of bicycle sales at Hans Johnsen and a longtime friend of Quinn’s, said he was a legend in the industry. “I’ve known Bill at least 37 years when I first started. Bill was a great writer and he loved the industry and was passionate about the business,” he said.
Quinn was at one time the youngest newspaper publisher in the United States when he took over the Grand Saline Sun in 1935. He was 22 years old. During his years of reporting and editing, he also covered one of the…

Men’s Cat 3/4/5
My 5th ever crit race.
This one was over before it began. With the shortening days, the 3/4 and 4/5 races were combined into a 3/4/5 field. That, coupled with a more difficult course meant that I was in for a shelling.
I lasted all of about 10 minutes, with…

Phase II of Pedernales Cycle Track Begins This Month
austinonabike.com
Bit of a copy/paste reblog here, but this just crossed the wire. It looks like Phase II of the Pedernales Cycle Track is about to be underway, bringing the track all the way from Canterbury up to Pleasant Valley – including, it looks like, a better connection to that sweet bike path you might not even know exists that runs all the way from around Webberville and Pedernales up to 14th Street.
Anwho, here’s all the details from Nathan Wilkes:
Dear Pedernales Cycle Track Project Stakeholders,
We are contacting you because we are ready to begin construction on Phase II of the Pedernales Cycle Track Project. Phase I from 6th Street to Webberville Road was completed as part of a street reconstruction project in September 2013. Since then we have been working to finalize…
