Buddy the Dog
If I didn’t know better I would think it is October. I started the ride at 9:57 under an overcast sky, 75 degrees and 82% humidity. I automatically selected a short sleeve jersey but when I looped back close to home I almost stopped to change into a long sleeve jersey. I didn’t though thinking that I would warm up as the ride progressed and the temperature would do likewise. After about 6 or 7 miles and zipping my jersey all the way up I started to feel warm. By the time I got to the Huffman Chevron I was sweating from all of the work. I used a bunch of paper towels to dry up some of the sweat. While I was at the Chevron another biker rolled in. We have talked several times before at the station. Our paths don’t cross often since he rides his Litespeed in the evenings and I ride in the morning. He was on his way back home after riding to Dayton. We chatted for a few minutes and then he said he needed to leave because his wife was expecting him to take her out to lunch. I finished my snack and drink before leaving. While I was wrapping up I was visited by Buddy the dog. He escaped from a van parked at the Chevron. One of the children in the van came to return him to the van while her mother talked to another lady.
Riding to Huffman I took the extended route to add a couple of miles by going to Atascocita Road and Aerobic Drive before going through Walden and across Lake Houston. I biked 34.68 miles averaging 15.6 mph. For some reason my legs felt draggy today when I was pedaling in my usual 34 x 12 gears. Riding west over Lake Houston took extra effort and the light west wind tried to hold me back. Turning north didn’t help too much. It was an effort to ride at more than 17 mph. Maybe the heavy air was part of the reason.
Even though I left late for Saturday I managed to see 2 bikers on Fairlake Drive, the one at the Chevron, two more on Atascocita Shore Drive and the last one followed for awhile on Kings River and W. Lake Houston Parkway until I turned into Kingwood Greens Village. I arrived back home at 12:50. The temperature was 79 and the humidity was 76%. I was still thinking it was October. It may not warm up to normal until Monday or Tuesday. The big storm Thursday night brought this coolness.
Where I stand:
- 187.91 miles this week (1 day to go)
- 71.22 miles for August (774 miles to go to hit my goal for August)
- 4283 miles for the year (2017 miles to reach my goal for the year)
