Riders On 750-Mile Trek Honor West’s Fallen First Responders
By: Matt Howerton      www.kwtx.com
WEST (May 27, 2014) Nearly 40 cyclists pedaled into West Tuesday afternoon after completing the sixth leg of the 2014 Brotherhood Ride, a 750 mile bike tour to honor 19 first responders who died in the line of duty in 2013 in Texas, including those were killed in the April 17, 2013 fertilizer plant explosion.
The group traveled 87 miles from Dallas to West Tuesday.
The tour started in Baton Rouge and will end in Houston.
The stop in West was symbolic.
The riders, almost all of whom are firefighters or police officers, wanted to honor the sacrifice of the 12 first responders who lost their lives in the explosion at West Fertilizer Co.
“Everybody always says we never forget, so we’re actually bringing that…

Q&A: New League study challenges assumptions about fatal bike crashes
by Stephen Frothingham      www.bicycleretailer.com
The League takes a look at how American bicyclists die.
WASHINGTON (BRAIN) — For years, friendly bike advocates have re-assured nervous newbies that — despite their fears — it’s very rare for bikes to get hit from behind by cars or trucks.
Turns out, maybe the newbies have reason to be nervous.
“It doesn’t matter how may times you say, ‘well, statistically that doesn’t happen very often.’ When you read about (a fatal crash) in the paper, that’s what happened,” said Andy Clarke, the president of the League of American Bicyclists.
The League recently published an analysis of fatal bike accidents in the U.S. It looked at the circumstances of fatal bike accidents and the…
79 crazy Texans volunteer to bicycle 4,000 miles to Alaska
By Heather Alexander      www.chron.com
A group of University of Texas students are doing their final preparations before setting off this weekend on the bike ride of their lives, all the way to Alaska.
The 70-day, 4,000-mile grueling haul to America’s Last Frontier starts on Saturday and is the eleventh time for what is the longest charity cycle ride in the world, twice as long as the Tour de France.
Riders have three routes to choose from, the Rockies takes them up through Colorado, then across Canada, the Sierra takes them up and down the coastal hills of California’s Highway 1 and the Ozarks, which brings them down to Houston then up the center of the country to join the others in Canada.
“I heard about it on campus, people were like, have you heard about these people riding 4,000 miles, they’re crazy,” said Houston native Reid O’Conor, who’s one of the 79 taking on the epic challenge designed to raise…
