Woman driving to work fatally strikes cyclist on dark Dickinson road

A bicyclist died early Monday morning when a car hit him as he was riding along a darkened road in Dickinson, officials said.
The incident happened about 5 a.m. on eastbound FM 517 near FM 646, according to Sgt. Michael Anzualda of the Dickinson Police Department.

How can I resist telling you about something that comes from a man whose email signature line is this: “Come ride. Come play. Do some good along the way”?

That man is Mike Keel, who wrote to invite me to a New Year’s Day bike ride he and his wife have hosted since 1990. I’m kind of a bike-riding wimp, although I quite admire people who have a passion for this.

He said it was A-OK for me to open the event up to anyone, though, so consider this your official invitation. The routes are 15, 28, and 40 miles long; each costs $25 and includes black-eyed peas and cornbread afterwards.

Location: The Oasis / Lynn Creek Marina, Joe Pool Lake, 5700 Lake Ridge Parkway, Grand Prairie

Distances: 31, 60, and 73 Miles

We have a tradition of welcoming the New Year with a bicycle ride, and this year we have three routes to choose from. They all travel south to Midlothian before returning to Joe Pool Lake.

2013 was a great year for our club and as we close out the year it is time to reflect on our accomplishments and think about what new goals you want to set for yourself for next year.  Our club has logged some serious miles in 2013 and we participated in may organized rides throughout Austin and raised a bunch of money for various charities.
