Afternoon in the Sun – August 12th Bike Ride
No bike yesterday but I am back riding today. The starting time was delayed until 1:37 because we are doing some renovation on our house and the contractor did not finish until then. With the later start the temperature had plenty of time to get hot and it was 96 when I rolled out the driveway and it stayed up there the whole ride. I got back home at 4:09 and the temperature was 97 and the heat index was 103. It could even hotter over the next few days. There were some clouds so the sun was not full power all of the ride.
While I was on a break in Huffman I checked the weather in Wichita Falls and it was 102 there but the forecast for the next 4 days was cooler than that with one day in the upper 80’s.
I biked to the south and east thinking I could ride 30 miles or so. The route actually totaled 32.28 miles. My average speed came in at 15.8 mph. On Fairlake Drive the City of Houston finished some road patching. There is a stretch on Old Atascocita Road east of the railroad tracks where the asphalt has slipped down the edge of the shoulder from the heat and there are some cracks wide enough to swallow a bike tire. This area has been patched once but it did not stop the problem. This in the east bound lane and the west bound lane does not have the problem. I need to move over to the center stripe to get around this.
No other bicyclists braved the heat on the streets I was on.
Tomorrow will probably be an afternoon ride as well.
