www.digitaljournal.com
Every summer, Gregory P. Crawford, dean of the College of Science at the University of Notre Dame, rides his bike across the country in effort to spread awareness of the Ara Parseghian Medical Research Foundation which is named in honor of beloved Notre Dame Football Coach, Ara Parseghian. The foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to funding medical research projects to find a treatment for Niemann-Pick Type C (NP-C) disease; a deadly disease that took the lives of three of Ara’s grandchildren.
Notre Dame Federal Credit Union has partnered with the University of Notre Dame’s College of Science to sponsor Dean Crawford’s fourth annual cross-country Road to Discovery bike ride. The 3,746 mile bike ride began on…
Top 10 Bicycle-Motor Vehicle Accident Causes: Awareness is Most Important Element
www.rhlawgroup.com
Bicycle safety and road awareness go hand-in-hand. When anyone is learning to ride a bicycle they are taught some fundamental aspects of biking safety. Typically, these include instructions to be aware of your surroundings, pay attention to other motorists, wear a helmet, wear bright clothing and to not bike at night without some sort of reflective gear or lights. Further, cities are becoming much more bicycle friendly and many provide dedicated paths for cyclists. In spite of all these great efforts to increase biking safety, it is not always enough.
A factor in many bicycle accidents is other motorists, motorcyclists, and commercial motor vehicles. When people get their licenses to drive motor vehicles they are not…

GPS Wars, Who Will Win?
by bbeasley         www.bikeforums.net
It’s going to be interesting to see how the GPS wars play out. Phone vs device who will win? So far I’ve found phones do everything okay, but not great.
In another thread this package was mentioned. Seems like great competition to the current batch of bike specific computers.
I picked up a Garmin 800 for $209 delivered, thanks to a heads up from a BF thread, and bought a $40 heart rate strap. I don’t care about cadence but to compare the sensor would add another $60… so $309 all in. 309 (and that was a great deal) vs 148 assuming you have an iPhone 5, I think they’ll sell plenty of those at that price difference.
The often mentioned issue of phones flying off of bikes doesn’t bother me, there are just as many anecdotal stories of Garmins being ejected as phones. I do think the battery life is a big deal but one that will get solved quickly. My Macbook Air has ~4 hours of, real life, battery power. I understand the newest ones are up to 8 hours and the Macbook Pro’s up to 12.
I’ve got two deal killers that keep me from using my phone. First is rain, my Garmin has been drenched with no ill effects. I wouldn’t want to put my iPhone through that and the current phone rain coats look hideous and I can’t imagine actually using the…
A Guide To Buying The Perfect Bike Rack
by Shawn      Texas Mountain Bike Trails
Swagman XC2 Hitch RackI just got this awesome infographic from Mike over at BikeRackShops.com. They are a one stop shop for all things bike racks. This is a subject I’ve been meaning to talk about for a loooooong time and just haven’t gotten around to it.
Let me just say if you aren’t using a good quality bike rack and instead are using a cheap-o trunk mount rack, the differences are incredible. I used a cheap $50 bike rack that strapped to the back of my car for years before finally getting a Swagman 2 bike hitch rack which you can see in the picture to the right. It’s amazing no longer…
