Wind No Coincidence? – March 8th Bike Ride
I took yesterday off from biking and the wind calmed down. I ride today and the wind kicked up again. This may be a coincidence but I doubt it. When I started my ride today the wind was 20 mph from the southeast with 23 mph gusts. To go with the wind the sky was cloudy with what might have been some rain clouds in the distance but no rain during the ride. The temperature held steady at 70 degrees but the stiff wind had a chill in it.
It was tempting to ride to the north but I turned to the south riding through Atascocita, Walden and Huffman. This put into the wind until about mile 21 when I turned north onto FM2100. From that point the wind generally was a nice tailwind. This route totaled 33.38 miles at a 14.9 mph average speed. My average speed would be a lot lower except that I shifted to a lower gear once I got the tailwind. Riding west over Lake Houston I glanced at my Garmin Edge a couple of times to check my speed and saw 22+ mph. I needed to put out some extra effort to warm up from my stop at the Huffman Chevron. I had to find a spot out of the wind when I stopped there but even then I got cooled down too much. By the time I reached the west side of Lake Houston I was warmed up enough to feel comfortable.
March miles total 177.31 and year to date totals 858.90 miles. Links to Garmin Connect and RideWithGPS.com data.
