Cycling Legalese – Bike Traffic Accident 101
by Brendan Kevenides, P.C.      UrbanVelo.org
Welcome to Cycling Legalese, an online cycling law column from everyday cyclist and Chicago based injury lawyer, Brendan Kevenides. Unfortunately traffic accidents are a reality for city cyclists, in this column we go over what to remember in order to protect yourself legally if you’re involved in a collision.
Q: What should I do if I am involved in a collision while out riding?
Brendan Kevenides, P.C.:Whether hit by a car or hurled into the street courtesy of a pothole, let’s face it, in the first moments following a crash you probably will not be at your best. You may not accurately process what happened do to pain, shock, surging adrenaline or all three. So, let’s keep this as simple as possible; remember the 5 C’s, Calm down, Call 911, Camera, Communicate & Care.
Step 1 – Calm Down. In the immediate aftermath of a crash you will likely be dizzy with questions. Did that just…

100KM of Slaughter Creek – 2-16-13
by John       AustinBike.com
So, you’ve ridden Slaughter Creek, and most likely said either “hey, it was convenient” or “wow, that wasn’t what I was expecting. However, if you want a grueling shot at Slaughter Creek, you need to check out the 100KM race on February 16th.
This ride will start at 11:00 in the morning, a little later in the day than some of the earlier races.
Slaughter Creek is a pretty tame trail down in the southwest corner of Austin, on the way out to Dripping Springs. While it is a multi-use trail (including horses), it’s distance from downtown means that it will be vacant of most non-bike traffic.

New Trail Building at Buescher State Park
by John       AustinBike.com
There is work going on to add more singletrack to the central Texas area, this time at Buescher State Park. For those of you that have ridden at Rocky Hill Ranch – Smithville, this is the park that you see just after you turn off of 71 and head east for the final few miles.
There is a thread going on at Bike Mojo, so be sure to stay up to date with the details.

If this is anything like Rocky Hill (and geographically, it should be), then the trails will be a lot of fun, and there…

Path to link Travis Heights with boardwalk
Work crews are starting work this week on a trail connecting Norwood Tract Park near East Riverside Drive to the boardwalk under construction on the south shore of Lady Bird Lake, according to a city of Austin news release.
Once site preparations are complete, workers will build a trail from Blunn Creek to the Riverside Drive sidewalk. Work on the trail will begin on the shoreline below the Norwood House and move west.
The trail will link Travis Heights to the boardwalk, a 1.25-mile path partly over water that…
Denton Bike Plans, Now and Future
by devintaylor         Bike Denton
In the past few months bike riders have noticed several changes around Denton. The addition of bike lanes to the west ends of Oak and Hickory is almost complete. The UNT pedestrian bridge has opened, offering an alternative to the North Texas Blvd bridge and Bonnie Brae underpass. The main span of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Pedestrian Bridge has been placed over Loop 288 and will soon provide a connection from Corinth, NCTC, and far southeast Denton to downtown (as well as providing a good route to cargo bike riders on their trips to Home Depot and Target). Tonight, City Council will hear a plan for improvements to East Hickory Street that will include back-in parking, a layout that dramatically…

Today’s featured cycling club, the San Antonio Wheelmen, is one of the first clubs in San Antonio and was founded over 100 years ago. They are about cycling education and community outreach with cycling enthusiasts of all ages and skills who are passionate about sharing the rewarding experience of cycling. We were honored to have the club president, Jose Rojas, talk to us more about the club. He’s given new riders some great advice and has shared his favorite routes in his area!
