Rick Vosper: Where will we get the next generation of affordable bikes?
by Steve Frothingham               www.bicycleretailer.com
Here’s an interesting question, especially coming so close to that national monument to the benefits of ruthless colonialism known as Columbus Day. It goes something like this: The nascent Chinese recession notwithstanding, the cost of manufacturing bicycles in China will only continue to rise over time. So where will America’s next generation of affordable bikes come from?
As I say, it’s an interesting question. And an increasingly timely one, for three reasons:
–The first is that every bike company I’m aware of is already asking it, at least internally…but not one of them is discussing the answers publically.
–The second reason is, that may…
Injured cyclist still able to tune up for ride
By Jessica Belasco         www.mysanantonio.com
Laid up after shoulder surgery last summer, 17-year-old Ian Kramer knew he needed a project to occupy his time.
So Kramer, who seems to have more hobbies than most teenage boys have video games, decided to combine two of his interests: music and raising money for Bike MS, an annual bike ride benefitting the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. He has participated in the ride since 2008.
To meet the $300 fundraising minimum, Kramer began selling CDs of his piano performances recorded by his piano teacher, Tim Wilborn. So far, he has sold…
Cycling The Globe: Austin To Houston
by Rudy Pospisil         blogs.theprovince.com
The terrain has changed dramatically past Austin. The dry endless moonscape desert-type land to the west has turned lush and green. Ranches with horses, cows, sheep, goats line the road. Wildlife has appeared within the endless thick tree-lined road and the dry streams are now carrying running water like arteries bringing the land to life. The hills are still endless but not as high. Up and down all along the road the lumpy terrain goes on forever. My altimeter says I have climbed 75,000 vertical feet (25,000 metres) My odometer reads 1,523 (2,500 km) since I started. By…
Burnaby fire captain riding across United States
By Alfie Lau, Burnaby Now
Burnaby fire captain Rudy Pospisil is about halfway through his latest ride.
Pospisil contacted the Burnaby NOW from just outside of Austin, Texas, where he’s relaxing midway through his seven-week bicycle ride across the United States.
“I started in San Diego on Sept. 20 and when I finish on Nov. 6, election day, I’ll be in…
Kentucky man rides through Jacksonville on quest to raise awareness of childhood obesity
by Amy Brocato Pearson Jacksonville Daily Progress
JACKSONVILLE — When Steve Stewart hopped on his black bike two weeks ago in Frankfort, Kentucky, he had two simple goals in mind: to raise awareness of childhood obesity and to get school systems nationwide to take a look at the program he developed to help combat sedentary lifestyles and boost learning.
Stewart, 41, is bicycling through the 10 states with the highest childhood obesity rates – all of which are located in the South, Texas among them – and plans to end up in…
2012 DORBA Fall Series Race At Rowlett Creek Preserve (RCP)
by Shawn McAfee         Texas Mountain Bike Trails
A huge thank you to my friend and Cadence Cyclery teammate Justyn Wilder. I’ve been in Arkansas on my anniversary this week with scarce access to the internet. Justin volunteered to help out and put together a spot on preview!
2012 DORBA Fall Series Race at Rowlett Creek Preserve (RCP)
The final round of the DORBA Fall series lands at Rowlett Creek Preserve (RCP). With many of the overall points races coming down to the final round. The racing should be close, intense, and racers will be going all out for the win.
The entrance to RCP is located off of Centerville Road just north of HWY 66. It has a great concrete parking lot but there isn’t a lot of room. Click this link for a map on the DORBA website that helps to lay out more…

Race prep in the flatland of north west dallas directly after riding in the Oachita mountains is kind of a drag. But I still LOVE IT!
