Day 5: Lubbock to Slaton – 20 miles – Bike Repaired and “Lubbock In My Rearview Mirror”
by Jim Fox         Cycling Across Texas
Today was scheduled to be a rest day, so i slept in just a bit. Dr Gale was generous enough to allow me to borrow one of his vehicles. So I drove my bike to Velocity Bike Shop to get my front wheel/spoke repaired and to buy some extra tubes. I dont generally like to endorse or promote a business, but I have to admit that Velocity REALLY REALLY did a great job with their repairs and parts. The repair was done quickly as I waited. If you ever need bike parts or repairs in the Lubbock area, you should really consider checking them out. They are located on 50th street.
After the repair and parts, I decided to check the weather forecast for the next couple of days. Today, there was some light rain in the area and potentially heavy rain and thunderstorms was predicted for tomorrow. I called up Dr. Gale to see if we could meet up for lunch. During lunch i mentioned to him that i was considering canceling my scheduled break day and trying to get some miles in this afternoon. We had planned that we would spend the afternoon touring the Texas Tech Engineering Department. But with tomorrow looking like a potential rain-out day, I didn’t want to have two days in a row with no miles. So regrettably, I cancelled the afternoon plans and got back on the road by mid afternoon. While…

The city’s Complete Streets project is transforming Knox for a weekend and it’s the perfect excuse for one last outdoor summer fling – sun, shorts, beer, bikes…. The Flow Riders: empowering women on the road
star.txstate.edu
The Flow Riders, a social bike club, stemmed from an idea to help women who were apprehensive of bike shops. The Bike Cave would stay open after hours to fix bikes and educate women about cycling in general.
“It was originally called Women with Bicycles. We would have DIY workshops and other things that go with the Bike Cave’s mission of educating cyclists,†said Judith Wilson, Bike Cave manager and Texas State alumna. “Soon after we talked about having women-only social rides as well.†…

Ride Report for 2012 Hotter ‘n Hell 100
Michael Guerra,M.D.
Kerrville, Texas
This years HH 100 was my second century ride and second HH 100. Last year it was 109 degrees and I finished in 10 hours, about seven hours on the bike. This year I prepped harder and felt I was better prepared to finish faster. I did not finish…
At the 90 mile point I cramped so bad I had to sag in, damn. I had a fore and aft sound system on my bike and had the Air Force Hymn all cued up to play on a continuous loop when I got to Sheppard. I also had an Air Force flag on my Camelbak, an Air Force jersey, and was going to switch to an Air Force ballcap for the ride through the base. The whole spring and summer I was anticipating the ride through Sheppard, and I crapped out!!! That was a huge disappointment and next year I will crawl through there on my hands and knees if it comes to that. The weather was so much…
