No Head Insulation – August 1st Bike Ride
August biking has arrived but the weather is unchanged from July. I got a fairly early start beginning at 8:53 AM. The planned route called for about 31 miles and I ended up at 31.15 miles. Average speed was looking good for about 15.5 mph but when I turned back towards home the 8 mph SW breeze seemed stronger than that and I slowed down some to end up at an even 15.0 mph average speed. When I was going with the breeze I show a 21.4 mph max speed with a 77.2 RPM average cadence. Around my route the terrain is pretty flat so the undulations on the roads shouldn’t present much of a problem but sometimes I start going uphill slightly out in the open where the breeze comes full force. This is when I appreciate the wind breaking trees and shrubs. Shade always is refreshing.
Getting started before 9 AM should offer somewhat lower temperatures and that was the case today with 82 to 90 during the ride. Scattered clouds and that light breeze helped to offset the 75% to 57% humidity. For some reason the sweat poured off my head heavier today. At one point I pushed my helmet against my bandana and a stream fell to the ground. I repeated this a couple of times with similar results. Maybe getting a haircut yesterday reduced my head insulation!!
