Big Bend Trail system threatened. Make calls.
by Sage_Cat         forums.mtbr.com
This call for action came out from the Wilderness Alliance of Texas and New Mexico.
Use the number to thank the park for including cycling in public lands planning.
…As we mentioned in a previous e-alert to our Texas members, in December 2010, Our Texas Wild submitted comments to Big Bend National Park regarding a proposed ten-mile mountain biking trail starting at Panther Junction. The trail would be the first of its kind in the US–going into back-country through potential wilderness areas. The trail is a pilot project of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Park Service and the International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) to increase biking opportunities.”
Sounds great, right? So, Please support IMBA and MTB trails by supporting the park’s decision to build this trail.

Did anyone see that one-legged woman who was FLYING past everybody despite the hills and wind on Day 1??? That was beyond amazing.
Day 2 was great, left at 7:30 and rolled into Austin at 12:45, with over an hour total spent at the rest stops. 17.5 mph moving average, mostly cruising at 19 mph, so I am quite pleased with that. …

New cycle track opens on Rio Grande Street
By Pam LeBlanc      Fit City
If you’ve ever pedaled along a busy urban street, you know the unwelcome feeling of traveling on a road built with motorists – and not necessarily cyclists – in mind.
That feeling is gone from a four-block stretch of Rio Grande Street, where officials on Monday unveiled the city’s first “cycle track.â€
The heavily-marked, two-way bike lane along the west side of Rio Grande Street between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and 24th Street buffers cyclists from motorists, giving them a more protected route through West…
Biking or walking for short trips makes good cents
By Moe Johnson Columnist      San Marcos Daily Record
San Marcos — One of the more talked about topics recently is the price of gasoline.
For the local area the price is high, but in comparison to other parts of the country, we are doing okay. Even if our area has somewhat lower gas prices it is still high for most of us.
There are a few individuals, or companies, that like these high gas prices. The economy car salespeople who try to make sure you know that their car gets 37+ miles per gallon, and the people that own stock in gas companies and oil are glad to see high prices. After that, there are…

Aero Road Bikes Square Off: Specialized Venge vs. Cervelo S5
by djcurtin         It’s Time To Ride!
Let me start by saying that my personal road bike is decidedly un-aero. It is metal, has round tubes, box-section aluminum rims, and 32 spokes per wheel. It’s a very nice bike by any measure. But it is not a carbon “wonder bike,†and it is basically the polar opposite of the Cervelo S5 and Specialized Venge. So I jumped at the chance to ride these two bikes to see what the deal is with aero bikes.
The aero road bike market, as I mentioned a few weeks back, is growing quickly. And with good reason. There is a real benefit to decreasing aerodynamic drag when riding—less energy required to maintain a given…
