By Dale Robertson
Mayor Annise Parker has confirmed her involvement, and City Council members are also being encouraged to ride in the first of three upcoming bike-to-work days that are intended, more than ever, to emphasize the viability of pedal power for commuting in Houston.
Parker will be part of the April 13 ride from the Memorial Park Picnic Loop to City Hall, which, for the first time, will also offer a group ride back to the park at 4:30 p.m. The mayor, for her part, will be using an…
Dave Preston’s TX RAAM Cycling Challenge – “Go Slower to Go Fasterâ€
By John Foote          www.ultraracenews.com
Dave Preston didn’t have too much going for him heading into the 2012 Texas RAAM Cycling Challenge 400 mile race in Marble Head, TX. Preston, from Issaquah,Washington had planned on racing the TX Hill Country 600km race the week before, but wasn’t able to make it. Seeing how he was counting on seeing the Hill Country, Preston signed up for the 400 mile race the following weekend. Strike two came after he had confirmed all travel arrangement and the developed a couple of different medical issues including the flu and kidney issues.

The April San Antonio Wheelmen Pedaler Newsletter
As usual, March has turned out to be a great month for riding. We all should take advantage of the weather when temperatures are in the 60’s and 70’s. This past weekend, I saw a lot of riders having fun on their bikes in Gruene, Cibolo, Garden Ridge, and Schertz. A few riders were even stopping to take photos with a background of beautiful flowers. Of course, daylight savings time provides us with an opportunity to get in a ride after work. I’ll take the hour-long ride after work over…

24th Annual Beauty and the Beast Bicycle Tour
Tyler Bicycle Club
The weather was perfect, over 800 riders, a WWII aircraft flyover, a little competition, and 200 plus volunteers made up the 24th Annual Beauty and the Beast Bicycle Tour this year. People came from miles around, as far away as Nebraska and as close a Bullard, aging from nine to 79 to ride this year’s tour. The efforts of everyone involved could be heard in the positive echoes of both riders and spectators located at each rest stop, on the routes, and especially from those finishing “The Beast!” As hard as it was to get up that…
The boom in biking benefits everyone, not just bicyclists
PeopleForBikes.org
For the past year powerful voices around Washington have singled out programs to improve biking and walking as flagrant examples of wasteful government spending.
Since last summer, proposals have flown around the Capitol to strip away all designated transportation funds for biking and walking—even though biking and walking account for 12 percent of all trip across America but receive only 1.6 percent of federal funding.
But yesterday (March 29) the U.S. House of Representatives—the hotbed of opposition to bike and walking as well as transit programs—voted to extend the current surface transportation bill for another three months, saving the funding of bike and ped programs. The Senate followed two hours later. (This marks the 9th extension of the…

On Saturday, the University of Texas hosted a road race and team time trial at Pace Bend Park. The park was teeming with fresh blooms of Texas wildflowers, as the week long Texas spring was still in effect Saturday morning. The road race consisted of multiple laps of a 6 mile loop, with several short but steep climbs totaling about 200 feet of elevation change per lap. The hills seemed easy at first, but begin to add up after a few laps. The growing women’s A field experienced a total of 1700 feet of climbing over their 49 mile race. Untouchable Midwestern State (MSU) rider Jessica Prinner broke away on her own early on, allowing her 3…
