Fasting for just a few hours slows an athlete down and the longer he fasts, the slower he moves. A recent study from Denmark shows that after 72 hours of fasting, a person’s muscles accumulate far more fat and glycogen (stored sugar) than after 10 hours of fasting (American Journal of Physiology, Endocrinology and Metabolism, January 2012). This slows a competitive athlete down because it keeps muscles from responding to insulin and using more sugar for energy.
Insulin drives sugar into muscles most effectively when muscles are low on sugar and fat. Filling muscles with sugar or fat blocks insulin and reduces the amount of sugar that can enter muscle cells. Routes vary from 25-70 miles and go through Comfort, Sisterdale, and Waring-Welfare and for the really stout-of-heart, Old Hwy 9 to Luckenbach. The Boerne ride is one of the longest running rides offered monthly by the Wheelmen for good reason – the scenery! The hills are challenging and definitely not for the faint-of-heart. The fun begins at the Boerne City Hall, 402 E. Blanco, in downtown Boerne. Take I-10 West to Business 87 (exit 542) and continue north on Main Street to the light at E. This ride is essentially a reverse of the popular Woman Hollering Creek Ride with a few new twists. The ride begins/ends at Britzke’s Restaurant in New Berlin. After the ride, there will be an opportunity to have lunch at Britzke’s. Directions: Take Loop 1604 South (past Randolph AFB) and exit I-10. Take I-10 East to the Trainer Hale exit. Turn right on Trainer Hale. Drive about 8 miles until road dead ends at Hwy 775; Britzke’s is across the street. Park on the side of Britzke’s toward the rear of the gravel parking area.
