Riding Among the Turf Farms – August 6th Bike Ride
It is hard to grasp how big Harris county is. Today’s ride was in the eastern portion of the county among the turf farms north of Crosby. I rode 39.44 miles and did not leave the county. There were over 50 other bikers on various parts of the route I was on. They were heading back while I was going to the turning point. I was thinking my route would be close to 40 miles and my guess was pretty close. As I was riding on the rural roads I could see the various grass fields as the giant watering equipment each uses. These come in various designs and the amount of area they can cover. The one that amazes me the most is the several hundred foot wide ones mounted on large steel wheels that are probably 10 to 12 feet in diameter. These march across the field slowly and the line always seems to be straight.
I started earlier than I have so far this week (8:01 AM) with the intent to get a jump on the temperature but it was 80 degrees even then. I should have started around 7:00 but my cell phone battery had emptied overnight so I need an hour to charge it enough for the ride. By the time I finished the ride the temperature was up to 92 degrees with a few light puffy clouds floating in the sky. Wind was light from the southwest. My average speed was 15.2 mph and the max speed was 21.7 mph. Average cadence was 78.9 RPM.
With today’s miles my weekly total is 195.84. I don’t think I have ever ridden this many miles in a week. Year to date miles are up to 3634.49. Tomorrow I plan on riding about 25 miles but next week I will not be able to ride since I will be in Tuscaloosa, AL working on the tornado cleanup.
