There was nary a cloud in the sky – August 4th Bike Ride
There was nary a cloud in the sky today while I was riding. I started early today (9:08AM) with the intent to get my ride in before the temperature got serious. It was 83 degrees at the start and 93 when I finished. I used a different sun screen today and to see if it would make a difference in the perspiration flow. My bike gloves got soaked but it could have been caused by the heat and gentle breeze (5 mph). Humidity dropped from 75% to 50% at the end of the ride. Riding in the shade makes a big difference in the heat as well as the ice water. With the record high temperatures drinking plenty of water is crucial.
For several weeks I have noticed a clicking sound when I am pedaling. I have looked at several things that might be the cause but today I noticed my rear quick release was not as tight as it should be so I tightened it some and the clicking dropped quite a bit. I was reading a biking email newsletter and a person was experiencing a similar noise and it turned out to be a broken frame. I check some of the points for cracks but did not see anything so I will adjust the rear quick release again.
August riding is moving right along and the miles are building up. Today I rode 28.92 miles at an average speed of 14.6 mph, max speed of 20.9 mph and average cadence was 77.1 RPM. I rode slower going west on FM1960 over Lake Houston when the wind seemed to be a strong headwind. I stopped for a rest at the Chevron in Huffman so I thought I would be more energized heading into the wind but I think the heat was partly to blame for the slower speed. Riding 4 days in a row might be a factor as well. I plan on riding tomorrow as well but will continue to keep the miles around 30 or less. Saturday I will increase the target to around 40. August miles are 127.78 and year to date miles are 3566.43.
